During the Cold War, Cuba built up the largest per capita armed forces in Latin America, funded and equipped by the Soviet Union. In 2015 Obama announced he would remove Cuba from the American government’s list of nations that sponsor terrorism, which Cuba reportedly welcomed as “fair”. They agreed to release political prisoners, and in 2015 the United States opened an embassy in Havana.

In 2024, it was reported that 8.19 million Cuban people have Internet access. The government of Cuba provides an online encyclopedia website called EcuRed that operates in a “wiki” format. Concert dance is supported by the government and includes internationally renowned companies such as the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Other traditional Cuban instruments are of African origin, Taíno origin, or both, such as the maracas, güiro, marímbula and various wooden drums including the mayohuacán. The Tres was invented in Cuba from Spanish cordophone instruments models (the instrument is actually a fusion of elements from the Spanish guitar and lute). However, some Cuban writers continue living and writing in Cuba, including Nancy Morejón.
Preventative medicine is very important within the Cuban medical system, which provides citizens with easy to obtain regular health checks. In 2014 there were around 50,000 Cuban-trained health care workers aiding 66 nations. Cuba has the highest doctor-to-population ratio in the world and has sent thousands of doctors to more than 40 countries around the world. After the revolution, the government increased rural hospitals from one to 62.
Several well-known Cuban religious figures have operated outside the island, including the humanitarian and author Jorge Armando Pérez. Regular power outages harken back to the early 1990s, a time when Soviet subsidies ended, plunging the island into economic hardship. Other critics of the Cuban government argue that the embargo has been used by the government as an excuse to justify its own economic and political shortcomings.

Batista regime

The middle class became increasingly dissatisfied with unemployment and political persecution. Between 1933 and 1958, Cuba extended economic regulations enormously, causing economic problems. However, in his “History Will Absolve Me” speech, Fidel Castro mentioned that national issues relating to land, industrialization, housing, unemployment, education, and health were contemporary problems. He then aligned with landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans. After finishing his term in 1944, Batista lived in Florida, returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952. The two terms of the Partido Auténtico brought an influx of investment, which fueled an economic boom, raised living standards for all segments of society, and created a middle class in most urban areas.

  • The economic focus on sugar production involved international volunteers and the mobilization of workers from all sectors of the economy.
  • It can translate meaning — including tone, context and intent.

  • In December 2024, OpenAI launched a new feature allowing users to call ChatGPT with a telephone for up to 15 minutes per month for free.
  • On balance, during the period 1933–1940, Cuba suffered from fragile political structures, with three presidents in two years (1935–1936) and in the militaristic and repressive policies of Batista as head of the army.

Migration

Near the centre of the island are the Santa Clara Highlands, the Sierra de Escambray (Guamuhaya), and the Sierra de Trinidad. The most rugged range is the Sierra Maestra, which stretches approximately 150 miles (240 km) along the southeastern coast and reaches the island’s highest elevations—6,476 feet (1,974 metres) at Turquino Peak and 5,676 feet (1,730 metres) at Bayamesa Peak. In general, the island runs from northwest to southeast and is long and narrow—777 miles (1,250 km) long and 119 miles (191 km) across at its widest and 19 miles (31 km) at its narrowest point.

The Cauto lowland adjoins a series of coastal plains that continue across the island from east to west, including the Southern Plain, Júcaro-Morón Plain, Zapata Peninsula (Zapata Swamp), Southern Karst and Colón Plain, and Southern Alluvial Plain. The island of Cuba itself is by far the largest in the chain and constitutes one of the four islands of the Greater Antilles. The country comprises an archipelago of about 1,600 islands, islets, and cays with a combined area three-fourths as large as the U.S. state of Florida. In 2015, Cuba became the first country to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, a milestone hailed by the World Health Organization as “one of the greatest public health achievements possible”.
In March 2023, a bug allowed some users to see the titles of other users’ conversations. Despite this, users may jailbreak ChatGPT with prompt engineering techniques to bypass these restrictions. A 2023 analysis estimated that ChatGPT hallucinates around 3% of the time.
These labels were used to train a model to detect such content in the future. These rankings were used to create “reward models” that were used to fine-tune the model further by using several iterations of proximal policy optimization. The fine-tuning process involved supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). ChatGPT is based on GPT foundation models that have been fine-tuned for conversational assistance. The service gained 100 million users in two months, making it the fastest-growing consumer software application in history.

  • In November 2025, OpenAI acknowledged that there have been “instances where our 4o model fell short in recognizing signs of delusion or emotional dependency”, and reported that it is working to improve safety.
  • In response, between 1960 and 1964 the U.S. imposed a range of sanctions, eventually including a total ban on trade between the countries and a freeze on all Cuban-owned assets in the U.S.
  • The model can also generate new images based on existing ones provided in the prompt.
  • Cuba has the highest doctor-to-population ratio in the world and has sent thousands of doctors to more than 40 countries around the world.
  • Once you give ChatGPT a question or prompt, it passes through the AI model and the chatbot produces a response based on the information you’ve given and how that fits into its vast amount of training data.
  • Regular power outages harken back to the early 1990s, a time when Soviet subsidies ended, plunging the island into economic hardship.
  • ChatGPT search is currently available to all users, even on the free tier.

ChatGPT gained one million users in five days and 100 million in two months, becoming the fastest-growing internet application in history. In The Atlantic magazine’s “Breakthroughs of the Year” for 2022, Derek Thompson included ChatGPT as part of “the generative-AI eruption” that “may change our mind about how we work, how we think, and what human creativity is”. Samantha Lock of The Guardian noted that it was able to generate “impressively detailed” and “human-like” text. Released in February 2025, GPT-4.5 was described by Altman as a “giant, expensive model”. O1 is designed to solve more complex problems by spending more time “thinking” before it answers, enabling it to analyze its answers and explore different strategies.

Other political parties campaign and raise finances internationally, while activity by opposition groups is minimal. The People’s Supreme Court serves as the highest judicial branch of government. The First Secretary leads the Politburo and the Secretariat, making the office holder the most powerful person in government. Hurricane Irma hit the island on 8 September 2017, with winds of 260 km/h (160 mph), at the Camagüey Archipelago. A temperature rise of 2 °C above preindustrial levels can increase the likelihood of extreme hurricane rainfall by three times in Cuba.
Emigration has continued into the 2020s, with the national population dipping below 10 million for the first time since 1980 in 2025. Internal migration has led to overpopulation in Havana, resulting in people living in makeshift shelters or overcrowded buildings, some of which are on the brink of collapse. In the 2020s Cuba is undergoing its most severe socioeconomic crisis https://www.betybets.nl/ since the fall of the Soviet Union, leading to a record number of Cubans fleeing the island. Also, in February, the government dictated new measures to the private sector, with prohibitions for only 124 activities, in areas like national security, health and educational services. However, this devalued the Cuban peso and caused economic problems for people who had been previously paid in CUCs, particularly workers in the tourism industry.
The largest is the Zapata Swamp, with over 4,520 km2 (1,750 sq mi). Other mountain ranges are Sierra Cristal in the southeast, Escambray Mountains in the center of the island, and Sierra del Rosario in the northwest. The lowest point is the Caribbean Sea at 0 m (sea level) and the highest point is Pico Turquino at 1,974 m (6,476 ft), part of the Sierra Maestra mountain range, located in the southeast of the island. The northeastern shore is lined by the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, which includes Jardines del Rey and is composed of approximately 2,517 cays and islands.
